Why Age Verification Laws Are Controversial

Even with systems like ours that minimize data, privacy and civil liberties groups warn that mandatory age verification creates very real risks.

These concerns are widely documented.

1. Age verification can link identity to highly sensitive browsing

Many systems require scanning government ID, using a digital identity wallet, facial recognition, or other forms of verification. Even when companies promise not to store this data permanently, the information still exists during processing.

If such systems are hacked, misused, or accessed through legal orders, individuals could be exposed as adult content viewers.

That is extremely sensitive information.

2. These systems can create massive data honeypots

When millions of people must prove their age, huge collections of identity records are generated.

Hackers target high value data. There is no such thing as a perfectly secure system.

If such data is ever leaked, the consequences are permanent.

3. Anonymous lawful browsing is being eroded

For decades, adults could legally view adult content without showing identification.

Mandatory identity checks move the internet toward identity-first access.

Privacy groups warn that once this infrastructure exists, it can expand to cover more categories of content.
